2015 Adult Swim Singles Program, Week 16: Myrkur – “Den Lille Piges Død (The Little Girl’s Death)”

Week 16 - Myrkur

Hey everyone! RobBarracuda here, and it’s time to talk about the newest release from the Adult Swim Singles Program.

This week’s single is titled “Den Lille Piges Død (The Little Girl’s Death)” by Danish black metal artist Myrkur, who, as far as total career path is concerned, is probably the newest out of all the artists featured on this year’s compilation. The project, primarily the brainchild of Danish singer-songwriter Amalie Bruun, released their first EP in 2014 and quickly drummed up quite a bit of hype in the metal community, and their debut album came out exactly one month ago on August 21st. So now she gives us this new song exclusive to the compilation and… eh, it’s okay I guess. There are a couple of things I do like about it, mainly Amalie’s hauntingly beautiful vocals which are always a joy to hear. In addition, I do like the dark gothic Lord of the Rings-esque vibes throughout. The problems I do have with the song don’t really have anything to do with Myrkur itself so much as my general aversion to the entirety of the black metal genre. The best parts are the first 30 seconds, with just Amalie’s voice and the creepy piano work, and at about 2 minutes 40 seconds in, when it goes into another creepy piano interlude. Other than that, the rest of the track is just straight up black metal, a style that’s always grated on my nerves somewhat. Despite that, it’s not really a bad song though, and I can imagine a lot of people enjoying it, so I give it a pass. You can stream the song down below, and of course you can download this and the other singles here. Let us know what you think of the song down in the comments, and I’ll see you next week when the next single drops.
