NEWS: Toonami Is Co-Producing New Episodes of FLCL

In a surprise bit of news from today, Toonami has announced via their Facebook and Tumblr pages that the network, along with Production I.G., is co-producing a sequel to the popular anime classic FLCL. The two are set to produce a total of 12 new episodes for 2 new seasons, each consisting of 6 episodes. That is all the information currently available, though we will be sure to update you with any new information when it comes up.

Update: 5:43 PM: Original series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki is returning as supervisor for the new episodes alongside Psycho-Pass director Katsuyuki Motohiro. The series is targeted for around late 2017/early 2018, and an early plot overview was given. Taken from Turner Broadcast Studios’ press release:

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
