2016 Adult Swim Singles Program, Week 1: DJ Paypal feat. DJ Earl + DJ Taye – “Dose”

Week 2: VHÖL – “Dispatch” —->

Hey everyone. RobBarracuda here, and it’s that time of year once again. The annual Adult Swim Singles Program has officially kicked off its seventh year of giving the network’s fans (and music fans in general) free exclusive music weekly from all across the musical spectrum. So let’s not waste any time and get into the first release of the year.

The first song we’re getting this year is “Dose”, from footwork producer DJ Paypal with additional production work from collaborators DJ Earl and DJ Taye. For the uninitiated, footwork is a genre of electronic music originally birthed in Chicago. The name originates from the manner in which people often dance to the pre-existing styles of juke and Chicago house, often relying on intricate and spastic foot movements. Eventually, producers started making juke music with faster tempos and crazier rhythms which morphed into the footwork genre. “Dose” is a prime example of this, especially with its wild off-kilter bass drum and snare patterns combined with glitchy electronic sounds. There’s also a nice touch with the opening and ending parts of the track which sounds like it features samples from a Super Nintendo game (my first instinct is to say these segments of the song draw from Super Castlevania IV). A solid way to start the program, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for next week. You can stream song below, and make sure to download it for free right here.
