<—- Week 8: Elysia Crampton – “Flora’s Theme”
Week 10: JLIN – “Downtown” —->
Hey everyone. RobBarracuda here, and it’s time to talk about the newest release from the 2016 Adult Swim Singles Program.
Blanck Mass is the solo project of Benjamin John Power, previously 1/2 of electronic/rock duo Fuck Buttons, and after having released a new album and EP last year, he returns with the single “D7-D5”. The song title is a reference to the album E2-E4 by electronic artist Manuel Göttsching, an album and artist often considered to be one of the most influential in the entirety of electronic music, referencing a sort of back-and-forth chess game that Blanck Mass is engaged in. The song itself is pretty straightforward as it drones on for nearly 8 minutes with its repeating industrial synths and drum patterns, occasionally mixing things up with chopped-up glitchy vocal samples. Despite the song being mostly repetitive, it works amazingly well as the switch-ups that do come up in the song make it feel like a journey and a proper musical experience, like the soundtrack to a montage scene in a dystopian sci-fi film in the vein of Blade Runner. You can stream “D7-D5” below, and you can download it for free right here.
In addition, Blanck Mass has also premiered a music video alongside the release of “D7-D5”, which you can check out below.
