2016 Adult Swim Singles Program, Week 15: Health – “Crusher”

<—- Week 14: Vince Staples – “’06”

Week 16: Tim Hecker – “veil scans” —->

Hey everyone. RobBarracuda here, and it’s time to talk about the newest release from the 2016 Adult Swim Singles Program.

This week’s single is the one I was most looking forward to when the line-up was first unveiled. While admittingly I only started listening to the industrial noise rock band Health because of their hilarious appearance on season 3 of The Eric Andre Show, I found myself hooked immediately, with Death Magic being one of my favorite releases of 2015. The group brings us a new single with “Crusher”, a song that’s every bit as great as all of Health’s other material. The melancholic dreamscape crafted by the haunting vocals quickly give way to heavy industrialized percussion in the first minute, adding a second dimension to the somber atmosphere of the tune. It’s a really fantastic moody tune for the first half, with the second half bringing more noise as the vocals give way to loud pounding percussion that only gets more intense as the sounds of hissing steam and clanking steel are layered on top in a rhythmically off-kilter fashion. This is easily the best single to be released by the program this year, and I imagine nothing else will come close to topping it, as good as the future singles may potentially be, but that’s just my inner fanboy talking. You can stream “Crusher” down below, and be sure to download it and the other released singles right here.
