Hello everybody and welcome to another recap of Hunter x Hunter. This week, we’re finally out of the Hunter Exam arc, and we’re now entering the Zoldyck Family Arc. Also, that intro thing is no longer there to pad out the episode, so if you thought that it would be around for over a year like One Piece’s is, then think again! Anyway, onto the episode.
After ordering their tickets in the last episode, the gang finally arrives at the Republic of Padokea, which is located right near Kukuroo Mountain. After gathering necessary information for locating Killua, they take a tour bus to the mountain. Once they arrive, they are greeted with the gates to the Zoldyck household, which are infamous for having nobody going through them and surviving. Two punks from the crowd proceed to attack the guard, Zebro, to force him to let them in, and the guard does let them in, only to be eaten by the guard dog only seconds later. After witnessing the fate of the two thugs, all the tourists run away in fear, with the exception of Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio, who are still determined to meet Killua. Zebro then proceeds to invite them in, since this is the first time he’s heard of Killua having any friends. He tells the gang that the guard dog is named Mike (pronounced Mee-Kei), and that he kills any intruders who enter the gate. We then learn that the guard isn’t really a guard, but more of a “janitor” of Mike’s leftovers. The janitor then shows them the way to the real gate, which allows people to pass through without having to worry about Mike. The only problem is that the gate requires a ton of pressure to actually push through. Actually, 16 tons of pressure to push through, to be exact. Zebro offers to train the gang so that they’re strong enough to open the door, but Gon passes the offer, since he’s only here to meet Killua. Knowing he won’t get through to Gon, Zebro calls up one of the butlers and lets Gon speak to him, but the butler won’t let Gon come and visit Killua, refusing to believe that he actually knows Killua or that Killua knows him. Frustrated, Gon decides to climb the door using his Fishing Rod. The gang tries to stop him, but Gon is too stubborn and won’t give up. Zebro steps in once again and decides to just let the gang inside the huge door. When they finally get inside and see Mike, the three start to shake in fear, but despite that, Gon still wants Zebro to lead the way so that he can meet Killua.
Since this is the beginning of a very short arc that’ll be resolved in the next month, there’s really not much to say here. It’s mostly just setting up the main conflict for the next four episodes and introducing all the necessary plot-points. Not that that’s a bad thing, but it really doesn’t give me much to talk about in terms of things I liked about this episode and things I don’t like, since nothing really sticks out here. If memory serves correctly, the rest of the episodes should be much more interesting, so at least there’s that to look forward to. I give this episode 6 giant flesh-eating puppers out of 10.
