2016 Adult Swim Singles Program, Week 29: The Obsessed – “Sodden Jackyl”

<—- Week 28: Chino Amobi feat. Dedekind Cut & Rabit – “Negative Fire”

Hey everyone. RobBarracuda here, and it’s time to talk about the newest release from the 2016 Adult Swim Singles Program.

Before Scott Weinrich became known for his work with Saint Vitus, he formed a band called The Obsessed, a cult favoriate group among enthusiasts of old school doom metal. The Obsessed have been active and inactive many times throughout their 30+ year career, and it appears like they’re back at it again, even having a new album in the works for next year. Today, they’ve released their first new piece of recorded material in 20+ years, a newly recorded version of the fan favorite track “Sodden Jackal” (renamed “Sodden Jackyl” here). The original single, released in 1983, is some prime old school metal, with all the fuzziness and Black Sabbath-esque atmosphere one would expect from this time period. Naturally, the new version of “Sodden Jackyl” takes advantage of current-era sound and production to add some truly massive weight and thickness to the guitars and drums, making everything more pummeling and doom-filled than the original, bringing new levels of rough and gritty sludge to the table. It adds a new edge to a cult classic song of the genre, and I highly recommend checking it out. You can stream the new version of “Sodden Jackyl” down below, and be sure to download it and the other released singles right here.
