JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency, Episode 10 Recap: “A Race Towards The Brink”

Original Airdate: February 15th, 2013

Toonami Airdate: March 4th, 2017

Wow, this really *is* just Wolfenstein 3D fanfiction.

As Joseph comes to terms with Stroheim’s unexpected resurrection, Kars seeks to continue the battle and put an end to his enemies. Stroheim demonstrates the power of his new mechanized appendages as he manages to break some bones in Kars’ hands, revealing that the power contained is at least twice as strong as Santana. Demonstrating more of his new body’s abilities, Stroheim reveals a machine gun embedded within his torso as he fires at Kars with extreme relentlessness, but this proves no use as Kars’ arm blades slice every single bullet in half, and he manages to get a hit on Stroheim and severs his body in half at the waist. He finds the Red Stone of Aja in his shirt pocket, and as it seems the battle is lost, Stroheim blinds Kars with an ultraviolet beam and sends the stone flying away from his possession and, unfortunately, sliding down a nearby cliff. Joseph and Kars race towards the Stone, with Kars appearing to clearly have the advantage here, but Joseph demonstrates his usual quick thinking and kicks a pile of snow into Kars’ eyes, nabbing the stone for himself. However, Kars uses his arm blade to pierce Joseph and drag him down in freefall off the side of the cliff.

The two continue their battle as Joseph continuously attempts to thwart Kars’ strategies. Joseph finally manages to get a leg up on Kars by using the Stone as a shield that he dare not destroy, and he even manages to form a path back up to the surface with the help of falling icicles and some Hamon energy shared between him and Ceasar. Our heroes venture off for now, leaving behind Kars at the bottom of the cliff. The next day, everyone is enjoying some down time in St. Moritz when Messina notices an abandoned building off in the distance, believing this is where Kars and Wamuu must be hiding out. Ceasar suggests attacking right now, but Joseph is against this idea as he believes that Kars surely must have a trap set up for situations like this. The two get in a heated argument about this, eventually leading into a fistfight that Lisa Lisa and Messina have to break up. Ceasar is incredibly stubborn, desperately wanting to take whatever chance he has to eliminate the remaining Pillar Men, and the episode ends with him going to the house on his own to confront whatever lies within.

This episode of the series is a perfect demonstration of just how great the show is at constantly escalating tension, primarily in the battle with Kars. There’s so many moments where it seems that the fight is won by one party, only for the other to suddenly bust out an unforeseen technique/strategy to try and turn the tide in their favor. No matter who appears to be close to victory, there’s always one more strategy that no one saw coming. Each fighter’s confidence in their own abilities can be brought down to earth in as quickly as 5 seconds. This keeps the battle intense and engaging the whole way through, and seeing Stroheim’s weird cyborg Nazi powers is appropriately bizarre and intense. The lead-up into the end of the episode shows some equally tense drama between our two leads and almost a reversal of roles from where they were closer to the start of the series, with Ceasar demonstrating the kind of hot-headed brashness that Joseph is normally known for. The ending of the episode leaves me eagerly awaiting where things go from here, and I would give this episode 10 cyborg Nazis/10, but there’s a scene where Joseph fucks with a cat for no reason, so 9/10. What did cats ever do to you, jerk?
