JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency, Episode 12 Recap: “A Hundred Against Two”

Original Airdate: March 1st, 2013

Toonami Airdate: March 18th, 2017

Man, “Sand Whale and Me” was friggin’ weird– oh wait, wrong recap.

While searching through the abandoned hotel for Kars and Wamuu, Joseph and Lisa are ambushed by a vampire named Wired Beck who’s guarding the entrance to Kars’ room. Lisa Lisa manages to eliminate the vampire with no trouble at all, and the two continue on their way. Eventually they make their way to where Wamuu is resting, but Lisa Lisa picks up on some oddities in the room, as she not only picks up on what are likely Kars’ footprints, but she detects something off about the air/oxygen in the room. Wamuu takes a moment to light a flame and reveal a hidden surprise: a massive army of 100 vampire soldiers hanging from the ceiling all under Kars’ command. As he is about to give the order to kill them, our heroes begin to mess around with their opponents, with Joseph planting an obvious Hamon net trap and Lisa Lisa lying about having a bomb ready to destroy the Red Stone. Using this opportunity, she arranges for two one-on-one fights to happen: her vs. Kars and the originally scheduled fight of Joseph vs. Wamuu, with the ultimate winners gaining possession of the Stone. Kars, miraculously, agrees to these terms, with Joseph being impressed at Lisa Lisa’s bargaining prowess in this situation.

The fight is set up for later that night at a coliseum in the area, with Lisa Lisa staying behind as insurance while Joseph goes to grab the Red Stone and drag Messina out of the hotel. While rummaging through her belongings for the stone, Joseph finds a photograph from 50 years ago showing his grandmother Erina, younger-aged versions of Speedwagon and Straizo, as well as a newborn baby. Curious about this photograph, he meets with the Pillar Men and Lisa Lisa at the arena. As they prepare for battle, Lisa Lisa fills Joseph in on the photo: during the climax of Phantom Blood, Jonathan had managed to rescue a baby girl from the burning cruise ship and sent her off with Erina. Lisa Lisa was the baby in that photograph, and she was eventually placed in Straizo’s care as Erina wasn’t able to raise 2 children at once. Meanwhile, Kars, Wamuu, and the vampire army complete the preparations for battle, which will see Joseph and Wamuu duking it out on carts drawn by vampire horses and fighting to the death. Joseph seems intimidated by the prospect of controlling these horses, but Lisa Lisa shows him how Hamon energy can be used to control them. With the stakes set up, Joseph jumps into the cart, ready to take on Wamuu, and even vowing not to drink the antidote until Wamuu is dead and defeated.

Given the sheer intensity of last week’s proceedings, it makes sense that the show would back off from the action somewhat this week. Apart from the quick encounter with Wired Beck near the start, the majority of this episode is about emotional aftermath and build-up, setting the stage for Joseph’s battle with Wamuu. There’s not really much to say in that regard outside of anticipating the payoff next week, except that the reveals regarding Lisa Lisa’s backstory are certainly interesting and tie into the original arc in some pretty substantial ways. It helps add a greater sense of urgency and importance to the events of the current moment, and I can’t wait to see Joseph go to town on Wamuu and grind him into chunky salsa. I give this episode 8 vampire armies/10.
